Pipes that are comfortable and durable

4 models in this range of pipes which is becoming very significant in the South African pipe world.

The normal way we buy pipes in the trade is to collect pricelists from the manufacturers (or visit the factory or showroom or stand at a trade fair) and select what we feel will give us the best value for money spread over a range of prices. But since most manufacturers have very similar cost structures the gaps between the various qualities in each pricelist are reflected in the retail prices – R495, R595, R695, etc.

The range comes from a family-owned pipe factory which specialises in producing private label pipes with comparable qualities to slot into such price gaps. This innovation, combined with a real enthusiasm and love for the trade, has been so successful that (having completed university studies) the fourth generation came into the business in 2005.
Buying is a process of advice and negotiation – deciding which finishes and shapes offer the best value for the price the buyer wants to pay: “maybe go for a slightly smaller / different bowl”.
In this way we (the buyer) can fill in the price and shape gaps in the range of pipes we offer to you the
pipe smoker; and from the supplier point of view the factory has a more efficient production run.

In fact, a considerable percentage of the Private Label pipes we see in the USA come from this Italian business enterprise. The buyer chooses a shape or shapes from the large (and I mean large) stockholding of prepared (cured and turned) bowls, specifies the price range and colour, and the bowls are selected and the pipes finished accordingly.

Finishes:
Natural – a light honey-blonde stain reveals the grain of the selected bowls. This finish can only be used on the better quality pipes – no flaw is concealed. The colour will deepen with smoking to a rich golden-brown.
Sepia-brown – a true brown - not too red, not too yellow, not too dark. It highlights the grain without over-emphasising the surface flaws.
Black Sandblast – shows the grain in relief, with a beautiful glossy finish.

– Classic bent. The metal band strengthens the shank. The Parma takes an optional 6mm filter. Smoking without a filter will not harm this pipe – the metal band protects the shank.

Marca Sport

This popular bent shape (with saddle or taper mouthpiece) was designed at the factory to accommodate either 9mm or 6mm filters, and we chose the 6mm option. For either size the shank is the same - elegant and in balance with the bowl; but choosing the 6mm option means that the bore through the shank is relatively narrow and leaves more wood than usual in the shank of a filter pipe - resulting in a stronger* shank, more able to stand up to the tough Teflon peg. A further worthwhile result of this choice is that the 6mm balsa filters are less expensive than any 9mm brand – an on-going benefit for the pipesmoker.
