Why is the Montecristo 4 so highly rated? What do you think?
The No.4 is flanked by two “good value” cigars – one from Cuba, one from Honduras.
Which would you choose: for a casual smoke at a braai, for a relaxed evening with friends, to smoke after a gourmet dinner?
They all have their place in your collection.

Montecristo No 4 (129mm x Ring 42)
Montecristo is one of the top premium brands from Cuba; its distinctive medium to full flavour forms for many Cuban cigar smokers the benchmark against which other brands are judged.
The No.4, totally handmade, classic Cuban flavour, is Cuba’s single biggest selling cigar. The success of the brand has a lot to do with its unique tangy flavour. This is partly created by storing ligero leaves for filler in special type of cedar wood boxes, partly because of a unique technique of arranging filler leaf. Enrique Mons, head of the humidor room at La Casa de Habano, says
"I have always smoked a Montecristo, it's a unique cigar with unique character.
The blend is rich, but more importantly, the wrappers are very special."

Partagas Mille Fleurs (129mm x Ring 42)
Second oldest Cuban brand, the Partagas is named for its founder, Don Jaime Partagas, who in 1845, opened the famous factory at 520 Industria Street in Havana, Cuba. A Partagas is immediately recognisable by its deep, earthy flavour. The character of its blend springs from a selection of tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region chosen for their unmistakable richness of flavour and aroma. The Mille Fleurs is machine bunched, hand finished in the La Corona factory under the strict supervision of the Partagas factory, which supplies the raw materials. This ensures quality and consistency. Excellent value from this more affordable Cuban cigar – but does it have the richness of the handmade Partagas?

Don Tomás Petit Corona (127mmxRing42)
The Don Tomás cigar is handmade in the Honduras American Tabaco SA in Danli, Honduras - a factory is renowned for its high quality standards. Cigar master and factory manager Estelo Padron was known to say, "there is only one way to make our cigars - the nineteenth century way”. And so it is with Don Tomás cigars, having been hand crafted in the old-world tradition since the 1970's.
The Don Tomás is a short filler cigar, short leaves, not shredded. Handmade with a filler of Brazil, Honduras and Nicaragua tobacco – bound with a binder from Honduras, and all neatly wrapped with leaf from Ecuador. One advantage of short filler cigars is that less handwork is required to ensure an even burning rate and consistent blend. This is where the skill of the blender comes into play. He must select leaves with complementary attributes and flavours to create a harmonious whole – a satisfying smoke!
