Soften the blow by holding the pipe at the heel of the bowl, not by the stem, to avoid breaking the stem; and where possible knock against a soft surface eg. a cork knocker, rather than a hard glass or ceramic ashtray, or the nearest wall.

If your pipe is damaged it can be repaired at a moderate cost, especially
when compared with the price of replacing it with one of equivalent quality.

PIPE CLEANING	*Preserving your Pipe - ongoing care*
After every smoke insert a plain pipe cleaner in the mouthpiece. When the pipe has cooled, remove the mouthpiece (gently pulling and twisting), remove the filter (if there is one), and pull the cleaner right through (away from the lip or you might get a bitter deposit on the lip). For thorough, "long life" cleanliness, use a Bristle cleaner and cleaning liquid through the shank at regular intervals - about one in every 10 smokes.
