| Pipes |
The durability and cool sweet smoking of the Alfred Dunhill pipe with its “White Spot” trademark are universally acclaimed. Made from the finest quality briar, the “Dunhill” represents more than 90 separate processes over a period of several months.
While there are checks and quality controls every step of the way, the final inspection before each pipe is released onto the market is made by only one person. An indication of the scarcity of fine briar to meet the standards demanded of a Dunhill “White Spot” pipe.
These standards ensure that each pipe will smoke perfectly from the start and, with proper care, will never lose its original sweetness. The flawless briars are perfect – no fills, no flaws, no pits; only 5 out of every 100 ebauchons entering the factory leave as a Dunhill. |
 |
The mouthpiece of every Dunhill pipe is hand-cut from a solid rod of “Vulcanite” – the Dunhill name for a rubber compound which, although tough, is easy on the teeth and does not flavour/taint the smoke. In colour it may be Black, or Cumberland (marbled brown).
The Dunhill “White Spot” was the first pipe to carry a guarantee. That little white spot is still a symbol of perfection and style, and the guarantee still holds.
Dunhill pipes have an exceptionally long life and are in great demand as refurbished “estate” pipes. They are highly regarded as “Collectibles”. |
Shell Briar – Black sandblast, deep relief grain, only suitable for certain grains; 1917 Black mouthpiece;
Cumberland – 1980 The sandblasted bowl is stained a deep reddish brown, then polished to highlight the relief grain; finished with a brown marble Cumberland mouthpiece;
County – The newest finish, a lighter modern, washed, deep tan colour; Cumberland mouthpiece;
Tanshell - 1953 Light tan sandblasted bowl; colour deepens with smoking to a rich golden-brown; Black mouthpiece;
Red Bark – 1973 A sandblasted bowl stained a rich deep burgundy; Black mouthpiece
SHAPES:
Currently 25 shapes with 2-digit numbers. SHAPE CHART
Occasionally a piece of briar is just asking to be carved into a shape which is not in the standard list. The general term for such pipe shapes is “Quaint”. |
|
SIZES:
Although scarcity of fine briar has always necessitated the pricing of Dunhill according to the amount of root employed in their manufacture, it is important to remember that, irrespective of size and price, they are of one quality only – the finest. The bowls are sorted into 6 groups.
| Group 1 Small |
Group 2 Medium |
Group 3 Medium |
| Group 4 Medium to Large |
Group 5 Large |
Group 6 Extra large |
When we select pipes, we try to choose the larger pipes of each shape from each group |

STAMPING:
The stamping tells the story:
|
 |
Today each pipe is stamped with the Dunhill logo in a circle; the finish by name;
and a 4 digit number giving Size,
Saddle/Taper mouthpiece, Shape number; For example: 3204:
3 = Group size;
2 = Saddle mouthpiece;
04 = Bulldog shape |

Root Briar – Introduced in 1930, this is a light-golden polished bowl which shows the flawless grain to perfection. Used only for the best quality and most beautiful grains.
|
Straight Grain 2 Star Root Briar;
Bent Rhodesian (2009)
Straight Grain pipes cannot be made
– they can only be found, and only from the best part of the root.
And here Dunhill has found a truly magnificent specimen in the Root Briar finish, which is used only used for the best quality and most beautiful grains. The delicate grain is followed all the way round the bowl and up the stem – and by choosing the Bent Rhodesian shape the pipe maker allows the smoker to appreciate the Birds Eye grain over the top of the bowl. The fine crafting of the rings adds to the beauty of the pipe. As you would expect, the bowl is flawless and perfectly cured, and consequently relatively light weight (39g) for a smooth pipe of this shape.
The size about that of a Group 3 pipe.
Dunhill stamps Straight Grain pipes “D R” – standing for Dead Root; with, since 1979, a number of stars (up to 7) for size. Originally the finish was Bruyere, but since 1930 the, then new, Root Briar finish has been most often used.

Root Briar; Group3 Liverpool, Silver band, 'Crosby'
This long-stemmed shape was traditionally a favourite of Bing Crosby. What an elegant pipe – such clean lines. And a stunning grain shown to perfection by the light Root Briar finish. The silver band is an appropriate finishing touch. |
Root Briar; Group3 Bent (2000)
I don’t know why this wasn’t snapped up – a perfectly balanced full bent with a saddle stem. Stunning birdseye all the way along both sides and up the shank, with matching cross-grain between. The angle of the stem was carved to suit the grain. A larger Group 3, yet its weight is only 43g.

Amber Root – bowls for this relatively new finish appear to be selected for their especially beautiful grain;
mostly Straight or Flame Grain
|

 |

Amber Root Group 2; Half Bent Zulu (2008)
This pipe was definitely hand cut to suit the grain – just look at how the flaring grain follows the line of the shank and bowl.
The balance is excellent, the feel is great, and the overall weight is only 33g
|
Amber Root; Group 3 Bent (2008)
A stunning classic bent. Beautiful varied grain – birdseye almost all the way around the bowl, with matching cross-grain under the shank. Very good balance. (35g)

Amber Root; Group 3 Billiard (2001)
A fascinating grain – even mixture of crossgrain and birdseye. Just look at the lovely straight grain across the rim of the bowl. A beautifully proportioned billiard, light and elegant. (34g)

|
Amber Root; Group 3 Billiard (2008)
The grain bursts from the base of the bowl flaring upwards to the rim, and outwards along the shank - creating an image of fiery flames which is heightened by the rich amber colour. (35g) |

 |

54-DHDPA4102 R 5 485.00  |
Amber Root; Group 4 Bent (2009)
The grain rises from birds eye at the base and gently curves back as it reaches the rim. The bent design is perfectly suited to this composition – not by accident. Dunhill pipemakers are true artists. Group 4 size, yet its overall weight is only 50g

|
Amber Root; Group 4 Bent (2002)
A beauty we found on our February trip to the factory – been waiting for us for 8 years. The grain sweeps up from the base of the shank (evenly on both sides) in a slightly lighter colour, and finishes in a panel of birdseye across the front of the bowl. Beautiful grain, beautiful proportions, beautiful balance (50g)

 |
Amber Root; Group 4 Billiard (2009)
This pipe is remarkable for its colour. It is a much lighter shade of amber due to the high proportion of really hard grain. The grain flows back from a point in the front of the bowl to a beautiful wide birds eye panel right where you, the smoker, can see it best. The large bowl is thickly-wooded, yet the overall weight is only 41g |

|
Amber Root; Group 4 Lovat (2009)
The grain is approaching “Straight Grain” classification for most of the bowl, just a narrow panel of birds eye. Perfect for this bowl shape. An interesting touch: the rim of the bowl is bevelled inwards. This makes filling easier, and creates a lighter look for this large Lovat pipe. And it is relatively light for a large smooth pipe – overall weight only 35g |
Amber Root; Group 5 Bent (2008)
A large bowl, yet the proportions give it a really elegant look. The feel and balance are perfect. And the grain! Flaming up from the base of the bowl, it runs straight along the underside of the shank. In the opposite direction it flares in a matching, almost straight grain, to the rim (57g)

54-DHDPA5103 R 6 895.00  |
Amber Root; Group 5 Billiard (2001)
A solid billiard – the slightly thicker shank lends an air of sturdiness to the pipe yet the proportions are maintained. As usual the pipe was carved to suit the grain – like a flame it flares from under the bowl and shank and flickers up to the rim. (51g)

|
Bruyere – the original finish from Dunhill – and the pipes are so smooth to the feel, more so than any other finish. The rich high-polished burgundy colour softens to a satin glow as the pipe is smoked; and over time the fine grain appears as if out of the shadows.
|

Bruyere; Group 2 Billiard (2009)
What a beauty! A classic billiard – perfect proportions. Exceptionally lightweight, only 22g. Can you just imagine the feel? Close, varied grain.

|

Bruyere; Group 3 Bent (2009)
Classic, taper stem bent, beautiful balance. It feels much lighter than 40g |

 |

|
Bruyere; Group 3 Billiard (2003)
This is a real classic billiard – simple, elegant, perfect proportions. Beautiful to look at, and to hold. I can just see the straight and flame grain behind the deep colour. A lightweight 36g |
Bruyere; Group 4 Billiard (2004)
A solid billiard – the slightly thicker shank lends an air of sturdiness to the pipe yet the proportions are maintained. Almost Group 5 size, excellent value. (49g)

|

54-DHDPB4103 R4975.00  |
Bruyere; Group 4 Horn (2008)
The bowl is thickly wooded, and not too big inside – perfect for outdoors. The shape, with its clean lines, is particularly comfortable in the hand. Because of all the wood, the overall weight is 47g

 |
Chestnut Briar
A rich, deep walnut colour complemented by the Cumberland mouthpiece – it was introduced in 1983 to to commemorate the closing of the Cumberland Road warehouse. The same stain and stem material as used on the Cumberland, but on a smooth bowl. Like the Bruyere, the finish is smooth to the feel and will lighten in time to show off the grain, which is usually cross-grain top and bottom with birdseye on the sides of the bowl.
|

54-DHDPN2102 R3725.00

|
Chestnut; Group 2 Bent (2008)
A comfortable bent – classic styling. Very light (27g) and as a bent the balance will make it feel even lighter. A good mix of hard and soft wood is shown in the cross-grain top and under the stem, and along the bottom of the bowl.
|
Chestnut; Group 2 Billiard (2009)
The billiard has classic proportions and weighs only 27g. A distinctive varied grain with a good proportion of hard wood.

54-DHDPN3102 R4125.00  |
Chestnut; Group 3 Bent (2009)
We enjoyed choosing this pipe – slightly large for its group size yet weighing only 34g. A little lighter than usual, you can see good mix of hard and soft wood in the cross-grain top and under the stem, and along the bottom of the bowl.
|
Chestnut; Group 3 Billiard (2009)
Perfect proportions (we chose it), large for its group size. Plenty of hard wood. (40g)

|

54-DHDPN3103 R4350.00  |
 |
Chestnut; Group 4 Bent (2002)
A classic bent - the balance makes it feel much lighter than 54g in the mouth. Beautiful to hold with an exceptionally smooth finish.
